How to write a job advert

Avoiding discrimination in your job adverts

At SDW, we are experts in all things recruitment for the shipping & logistics industry, so when it comes to writing job adverts, not only do we know what works and what doesn’t – we also know what is deemed as discrimination and what is okay to write.

So, if you are looking to write your own job adverts (don’t forget we can post them for you across all the leading job boards for just £199), then this guide is specifically written with you in mind.

So, what is classed as discrimination in a job advert?

The Equality Act legally protects people from discrimination. In a nutshell, this means from unfair treatment on the basis of certain personal characteristics.

The main 9 personal characteristics are:

  1. Sex
  2. Age
  3. Disability
  4. Marriage of Civil Partnership
  5. Race
  6. Pregnancy
  7. Religion / Beliefs
  8. Sexual Orientation
  9. Gender Reassignment

So, when writing your job adverts, male sure that you are not discriminating on any of the above. Some of our clients are even surprised that you cannot even state the number of years’ experience your ideal candidate should have. This can be seen as discriminating against younger applicants who may not have had the chance to gain that experience – Crazy I know, but that’s the law.

If you would like any advice or have any questions on anything recruitment related within the freight & logistics industry, please do not hesitate to contact myself or one of the team.

All the best,
